The 2 Second Rule

At any speed, on any road, we need to travel at a safe following distance to the vehicle ahead of us. Travel too close and the consequences could be dramatic if not fatal!
The rule is, that on a solid fixed surface road in the dry, you should keep back from the vehicle ahead of you by at least 2 seconds.

In the wet it should be at least 4 seconds.

And on snow or ice-covered roads, it should be at least 20 seconds.

Thinking Distance + Braking Distance = Stopping Distance

• Find a fixed object on the road or at the side of the road.
  (Lamppost, tree, etc).
• As the rear wheels of the vehicle in front of you passes that object, say    the phrase "Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule"
• It roughly takes two seconds to say it.
• Repeat the phrase twice on wet roads.
• Repeat it 10 times for snow- or ice-covered roads.
• Based on circumstances you should not have passed the fixed object      before finishing the phrase. If you cannot finish the phrase, you are too    close

Stopping Distances

The chart shown the typical stopping distances that are required to bring a vehicle to a complete stop.
Many factors can change the results.
The condition of the road.
The weather on the road.
The size of the vehicle
The tyre condition
The brakes condition

The UK Speed limits for various types of vehicles on various types of road

Your tyres are the ONLY thing keeping your car in contact with the road.
Allowing these to become worn out, your ability to remain on the road safely, becomes vastly reduced.
The more tread you have the safer you are.

Although the minimum legal tread depth for tyres in the UK is 1.6mm, the difference in stopping distance in the wet compared to a tyre that has 3mm of tread is huge!
Tests conducted have shown that a tyre with 3mm of tyre tread would stop within 91 metres when travelling at 70mph.
A tyre with the legal minimum of 1.6mm would take 135 meters to stop at the same speed.
Which roughly means it would need an additional 11 car lengths to come to a stop!
